5 Tips on Raising Happy Children

Nurture and nature play important roles as far as raising children is concerned. There are several things that parents should do to ensure that children are raised in the right manner. Parents should ensure that the children consume the right nutrients, get enough quality sleep and stay healthy, both emotionally and physically. Here are some steps that may help you raise a happy child.

First, you should let your child be aware that you’re excited to see them as they enter the room. You should let them see that light dance inside your eyes when they look at you. You should be mindful of their presence through showing them your smile, and warmly greeting them. Call out their names aloud. Your child adores you the most. And imagine the returns after childhood that’s filled with much affection.

Secondly, you should teach the child it is okay to be bored. Yes, as parents our normal instinct is to keep on entertaining the child every waking hour. If we don’t have the energy and time, we allow the babysitter to do it on our behalf. However, when we depend on TV, or any other form of entertainment, we only succeed in limiting their imagination. The child has clear imaginations that only flourish when nurtured. But without opportunity for creativity, it all withers away. Give the child a piece of paper and crayons instead.

Thirdly, the child should know that they are more vital than work. You should give the child tender loving affection. The child doesn’t just need you around. He or she need you present. Therefore, play with the child. Discover what’s important to them through asking questions and be attentive to their answers. The child deserves a little bit of you every day. You shouldn’t let your work separate you from the child. Letting him or her know they are important just makes them happy.

Fourthly, you should allow the child to make a few rules. You do not have to make them the boss so as to let them feel that they are empowered. Sometimes, power struggles with the children are a result of them feeling they have lost control. You may curb easily such instances through allowing the child to feel like they are making some decisions. This is going to make them follow the rules.

Lastly, you should model appropriate behavior. Children normally do what they see, and not what they are told. When you need the child to be mindful of others, you too should do the same. When you need the child to be happy, you should also smile without hesitation. You are the role model to your child.

Dental Tips for Children’s Oral Health

While oral sickness is easy to prevent, there are still lots of children that get tooth decay. Such kids often experience pain, find it hard to sleep, and at times, undergo major dental treatments – like tooth extraction with general anesthesia.

When a child gets cavities at a much younger age, it can be assumed that he/she will also develop cavities when his permanent teeth develop. For this reason, it is crucial for kids to have good oral hygiene habits when they are still very young.

Eat the Right Foods

Children should eat a variety of nutritious foods, especially in childhood when they are still going through the developing years. This is the time when their eating behavior is established. Provide children with different nutritious foods such as fruits, vegetables, natural yogurt and meat.

  • Try your best to reduce your child’s intake of sugary drinks like sodas, energy drinks, fruit juices and syrups, since these sweet drinks can cause tooth decay.
  • Reduce their consumption of sweet drinks, particular in between meals.

Brush your teeth properly.

Brushing teeth using a proper technique is a must for the maintenance of healthy teeth and gums. Observing good oral hygiene at a much early age reduces the risk of acquiring gum disease at a later age. Teach them to brush their teeth at least twice daily – in the morning and in the evening, as well as after eating meals.

  • It is recommended for infants to use a soft toothbrush, and for children 18 months to 6 years to use toothpaste (in a pea-sized amount) with less fluoride.

Practice Healthy Habits at an Early Age

It would benefit children to develop healthy habits early in life. Habits such as brushing teeth regularly, eating a nutritious diet and visiting a dentist regularly allow them to maintain good oral health. The moment the first tooth of your child appears until 1 year old, he/she should have oral health checked. Based on a child’s oral health, the dentist/pediatrician will recommend when to visit the dental clinic.

  • Whenever there is any dental problem, go immediately to the dentist to have it checked.
  • Make dental visits a part of your child’s normal routine.
  • Make a dental appointment early in the day, when your child is not yet tired.

Tips For Treating Children With Traction Alopecia Hair Loss

Children are just as susceptible to traction alopecia as adults are. The causes of traction alopecia in children are similar to grown ups. Hairstyles such as pigtails, cornrows and braiding can cause hair loss in kids. When a child’s hair is repeatedly styled tightly, over a period of time hair follicles become damaged and incapable of producing healthy hairs. The hair follicle may become so damaged that it stops producing hairs altogether. Hair loss occurs in the areas of the scalp that are pulled the most, usually at the front hair line, the nape of the neck and crown.

Traction alopecia in children can be treated in a similar fashion to the way it is treated in adults. In fact children have a much better chance of regrowing hair from damaged hair follicles if treated correctly. It is worth bearing in mind that children have more sensitive skin than adults and certain rules should be followed in order not to cause more damage to their delicate scalps.

Tip number one – avoid tight hairstyles

Avoid hairstyles that cause any sort of pulling whatsoever on hair follicles. Don’t use rubberbands, headbands, clips or any accessories that may cause tension on the scalp. If possible let the child wear their hair down.

Rule number two – do not use harsh chemicals

It is not uncommon for people that have children with unmanageable hair to be tempted to apply some sort of texturizing treatment to tame their wild unruly hair. Texturizers and relaxers contain powerful ingredients to chemically restructure the hair and can damage the scalp of an adult, talk less of that of a child. Although some of these products are made with gentler formulae and aimed at children, it is best to stay clear of any products that might interfere with the health of the child’s hair follicles.

Rule number three – maintain a clean scalp

A dirty scalp is an ideal place for fungus to grow which results in conditions such as dandruff. Ensure the scalp is kept clean by washing it several times a week. A clean scalp will also help remove any dirt and sebum blocking the hair follicles. Most shampoos, even those designed and made for children contain sodium laureth sulfate, a cheap detergent that is also an irritant. It’s a cheap foaming agent that “cleans” the hair by stripping away grease and your hair’s natural oils. Aim for a shampoo that is sulfate free and if you can afford it organic or plant based.

Rule number 4 – apply a hair promoting topical treatment

Hair loss treatments can be applied directly to the scalp to stimulate hair follicles into producing new hairs. While products like minoxidil are suitable for both adult men and women, it should not be used on a child. Instead other hair promoting topical natural treatments can be used. Bhringaraj has been used for centuries in India to promote hair growth and can be safely used on a child. It is a plant and can be applied on a child’s scalp without fear of any adverse effects. Bhringaraj is popularly sold in both its powder form and as an oil. Simply add some water to a teaspoon of powder and mix it into a smooth paste which can be applied to the areas where hair loss has occurred.

Rule number 5 – regular scalp massages

A regular scalp massage will increase circulation and also stimulate damaged hair follicles. Getting into the habit of gently massaging the child’s scalp will speed up their hair regrowth. It is best to use a lubricating agent such as oil to eliminate any friction which may cause further damage to the scalp or hair follicles.
